Rain Gutter Drainage & Cleaning Solutions

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters provide underground gutter drainage cleaning for existing drains as an additional service to our gutter cleaning services (In participating locations, call for more information). If you are having underground gutter drainage problems or If your home is in need of underground drainage pipes, we set you up with our drainage professional partners.

Some of the signs you may need underground drains are: you are experiencing flooded basements and garages, as well as, foundation damage and rotted wood. When your rain gutters drop rain within the footprint of your home, the water will follow the path of the back-fill into your foundation. When our solutionists come out to your home, they are trained to look for areas where your home may be experiencing problems with poor rain water drainage.

How do I know if I need to have my underground gutter drains cleaned?

If you are experiencing pooling in your yard or areas where your underground gutter drain is installed, you may have a clog causing the drain to leak. Another sign is rain water overflowing the gutters even after a cleaning has been performed. Sometimes, the clog can be spotted from the opening of the drain. If you are unsure if your underground gutter drain is clogged, call The Brothers That Just Do Gutters for a free estimate.

During a rainstorm the gutters will catch all the rainwater from your roof and carry it down to the ground. If your home does not have extensions or underground drains, the water will begin ponding next to your home. Over time this water can penetrate your foundation, undermine stairs and patios and cause major damage. Many times, wet basements can be resolved by fixing a broken rain gutter, adding underground drains, or preventing rain water overflow in the gutters.

Gutters draining into high traffic areas such as walkways and driveways often cause slipping injuries. The solution is to take the downspouts underground and away from the high traffic areas. In some cases we even re-route the gutters and downspouts to a different area of the home and then bring them underground to avoid digging up driveways and walkways.

The Trifecta

The most ideal situation for protecting your home, is what we call the “trifecta.” This includes three key elements to ensure the most protection for your home.

  • The first key to the “trifecta” is having new or well functioning, properly sized gutters.
  • The second key is covering your gutter system with a leaf guard product like our mesh gutter system.
  • The third key is running the water through underground drainage pipe far away from your home.

All three of these elements complete the “trifecta.”

The reason we recommend a mesh gutter guard system, is because you do not want your underground drains to clog. A clog underground requires the costly expense of having a routing company come out and clear the drain. These services are expensive and not guaranteed.

Underground Gutter Drainage Questions, Answered

Where does underground gutter drainage send the water?

Underground drainage connects your downspouts to buried lines that carry roof water to daylight, a drywell or a storm connection, well away from the house. That protects the foundation, your landscaping and your walkways from the water a downspout would otherwise dump right at the base of the wall.

How can I tell if my underground gutter drain is clogged?

Look for water pooling in the yard where the line runs, a wet area around the drain opening, or gutters that still overflow right after they have been cleaned. Sometimes the clog is visible at the opening of the drain. If you are not sure, a Solutionist can check it during a free estimate.

Can you clean out underground drains that are already installed?

Often, yes. Cleaning existing underground drains is offered as an add-on to gutter cleaning at participating Brothers locations, so call (213) 205-6598 to confirm it is available for your address. Mention your buried lines when you book so the crew can plan for them. If a line needs more than a cleaning, a Solutionist will tell you what the next step is.

What is the gutter trifecta?

The trifecta is our term for the best protection a home can have: properly sized gutters in good working order, a mesh gutter guard over the whole system, and underground drainage that carries the water far from the house. The guard matters because a clog underground usually means paying a drain routing company, and that service is costly and not guaranteed.

Can you avoid digging up my driveway to run drainage?

Often, yes. In some cases we reroute the gutters and downspouts to a different side of the house first, then take them underground where the digging is easy. That also moves water away from walkways and driveways, where a downspout draining across the concrete becomes a slipping hazard during a storm.

Is underground drainage a good idea on a hillside lot in Los Angeles?

Yes, it is one of the best things you can do for one. Hillside and canyon homes need roof water carried to a controlled drain, not released onto the slope, because saturated hillsides are what give way in a wet winter. Buried lines move that water where it can do no harm. Ask about it before the El Niño storms arrive.
