LA Rain Rebate Guide

Who pays LA homeowners to catch rain, and what your gutters need first

Most rain barrel money in Los Angeles flows through one place: SoCal WaterSmart, the rebate program run by the Metropolitan Water District for its member cities and water agencies. You buy the barrel or cistern, install it on a downspout, then apply online with your water bill and receipt. What changes is the amount. LADWP customers in the City of Los Angeles get an enhanced rate of up to $50 a barrel or up to $500 for a cistern. Burbank Water and Power, Glendale Water and Power, Beverly Hills and Las Virgenes Municipal Water District customers in Calabasas are pointed to the regional base rate. Santa Monica runs its own, richer Rain Harvest Rebate, and LA Sanitation points city residents to the regional rebates and posts rain barrel installation and maintenance videos.

Here is the part most people miss. Every one of these programs is really a gutter program. SoCal WaterSmart requires existing gutters along the entire roof perimeter plus downspouts, or on a partly flat roof, gutters on every pitched section. The barrel has to receive all the water from a downspout unimpeded, sit about 6 inches off the ground on a solid base, and keep a lid and a screened overflow. If your house has gutters on the front only, or a downspout that dumps on the driveway where the barrel cannot go, the rebate stalls before it starts.

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Los Angeles is owned by Robinson O’Brien-Bours and holds California contractor license 1140218. We do not sell barrels, but we get the roofline ready for one: seamless gutters formed on-site to close the gaps, downspouts added or moved to where the barrel will sit, and BroGuard mesh that keeps palm litter and leaves from rotting in the tank. Where you would rather send water to a planted area or out to the street, we extend and redirect the downspouts instead.

Why the Brothers

Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call the Brothers

01We read the program rules

Full perimeter gutters, a downspout feeding the unit, overflow away from the house: we set the roofline up to match what the rebate pages require.

02Downspouts where you need them

We add or move downspouts so the barrel sits off the walkway on a solid base, the placement SoCal WaterSmart asks for.

03Cleaner water in the tank

BroGuard mesh and a fall cleaning keep leaves and grit out of the barrel, so stored rain stays usable.

04Locally owned in Los Angeles

Year-round

Your Los Angeles gutter calendar

LA gets most of its rain in a few winter storms, so the timing of a rain barrel project matters as much as the rebate.

Close gutter gaps, place the barrel downspout and clean the system, then buy and install the barrel before the first storm.

  2. Winter · Dec to FebCapture and watch overflow

Check that each storm fills the barrel, the lid stays on and overflow runs away from the foundation and the neighbor’s yard.

  3. Spring · Mar to MayUse the water, file the claim

Water the garden from the spigot, and if you bought this season, make sure your rebate application is in within one year of purchase.

  4. Summer · Jun to AugEmpty, clean, repeat

Drain and rinse the barrel, check the screens for mosquitoes, and book gutter replacement while it is dry.

Los Angeles Gutter Questions, Answered

How much does LADWP pay for a rain barrel in 2026?

LADWP lists up to $50 per rain barrel, with a limit of two per household, or up to $500 for one cistern of at least 200 gallons. You cannot claim both. Apply through SoCal WaterSmart with a copy of your LADWP bill and a receipt showing brand, model, price and purchase date. Every amount in this guide was checked on the program pages in October 2026.

Do I need gutters to get a rain barrel rebate in Los Angeles?

Yes. SoCal WaterSmart requires existing gutters along the entire roof perimeter plus existing downspouts. On a partly flat roof, every pitched section needs gutters. The barrel must take all the water from a downspout unimpeded. If your home only has gutters on one side, close that gap first, as this guide explains, or the application can be denied.

What does Santa Monica pay for rain barrels and downspout redirects?

The City of Santa Monica Rain Harvest Rebate lists $200 for a barrel up to 199 gallons, $500 for a 200 to 499 gallon cistern, $2,000 for a 500 gallon or larger cistern, up to $1,000 for a rain garden and $40 for a downspout redirect to landscape. A city post-installation inspection is required. Confirm current amounts with the city before buying.

What if I live in Burbank, Glendale, Beverly Hills or Calabasas?

Burbank Water and Power, Glendale Water and Power, Beverly Hills and Las Virgenes Municipal Water District all send customers to the SoCal WaterSmart regional rebate. That pays $35 per barrel of 50 to 199 gallons, up to two, or one cistern at 250, 300 or $350 depending on size. Amounts in this guide are as listed in October 2026.

Can I get a free rain barrel in Culver City or Malibu?

West Basin Municipal Water District gave away 1,500 free rain barrels at fall 2025 events, including Culver City on October 11 and Malibu on November 22, with a limit of two per address and installation photos due within 30 days. West Basin has posted a 2026 interest list. Check your address on its site to confirm you are in the service area.
