Gutters for the river blocks of Elysian Valley

Elysian Valley is a narrow strip of streets, about three miles long, with the Los Angeles River on one side and the Golden State Freeway on the other. It was farmland until the city annexed it in 1910, and house lots were laid out starting in 1913. Locals still call it Frogtown, a name from the years when Western toads swarmed its streets. In census tract 1872, around Ripple Street and Blake Avenue, the median home dates to 1956 and more than a third were built before 1940, so many of these rooflines are older than the freeway that boxes them in.

The street trees are a mixed bag. The city’s inventory for these blocks is led by Indian laurel figs and crape myrtles, with Brisbane box, Mexican fan palms and Southern California black walnuts in the mix, and the 3.9-acre Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park on Rosanna Street adds more than 100 California native trees. Fig leaves drop constantly, crape myrtles shed seed capsules after they bloom, and walnuts drop husks onto the roof. Rain is a winter event: downtown’s NOAA normal is 14.25 inches a year, and the park was built with bioswales to filter street runoff before it reaches the river.

Robinson O’Brien-Bours owns The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Los Angeles, and our crews cover Elysian Valley along with Atwater Village across the river and Glassell Park up the hill. Lots here are tight, so we form seamless gutters right at the curb, keep downspouts pointed away from the property line, and add BroGuard wherever ficus hangs over the eave. Every estimate is free, written and itemized.

“I hired The Brothers That Just Do Gutters to install some gutters above my driveway. The installer was Emiliano. He did an amazing job, didn’t take too much time, was very professional, and charged a fair price. I would highly recommend this company and installer to anyone.”

Elysian Valley Gutter Questions, Answered

Does living by the LA River change how I handle gutter water in Elysian Valley?

It changes where the water should go. Street runoff here heads for the river, which is why Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park was built with bioswales to filter it. On your lot the goal is simple: get roof water away from the foundation and the property line, ideally into a planted area that can soak some of it in. We look at that on every Elysian Valley estimate.

My house is older than the freeway. Should I repair or replace?

Look at the fascia and the metal. Many homes around Ripple Street and Blake Avenue predate 1940, and the gutters on them have been patched more than once. If a couple of seams leak, repair is fine. If the wood is soft or the trough is rusted through, a new seamless run on fresh fascia is the better use of your money.

What trees cause the most gutter trouble in Elysian Valley?

Indian laurel figs and crape myrtles are the most common street trees here. Figs drop small leaves all year that pack into downspouts, and crape myrtles release seed capsules after they bloom. Walnut husks and palm fronds add bulk in some yards. A fall cleaning plus BroGuard mesh where the canopy hangs over the roof keeps most of it out.

When should I schedule gutter cleaning before winter?

September through November. Almost none of downtown Los Angeles’ 14.25-inch yearly normal falls between May and September, and most of it arrives from December through March. With NOAA’s El Niño advisory pointing to a wet 2026-27 season, get the trough clear and the downspouts tested before the first storm, not after the first overflow.

Which streets in Elysian Valley do you cover?

All of them, including Riverside Drive, Ripple Street, Blake Avenue, Knox Avenue, Gleneden Street, Rosanna Street and Fletcher Drive, plus the homes near the Elysian Valley Recreation Center and Alessandro Elementary. We work Atwater Village and Glassell Park across the river too. Ring (213) 205-6598 to book a free written estimate.
