Miracle Mile Gutter Solutionists

Gutters for the Miracle Mile’s 1920s blocks

Most people know the Miracle Mile for Wilshire Boulevard, the museums and the La Brea Tar Pits, where George Allan Hancock gave 23 acres to the county in 1924. Most of the homes sit just south of all that. The Miracle Mile HPOZ takes in 1,347 properties from Orange Grove Avenue east to La Brea, and its building boom ran hardest from 1922 to 1930. North of Olympic, streets like Masselin, Cochran, Hauser and Curson are lined mostly with one-story houses, with Spanish Colonial Revival by far the most common style and English Tudor second. Up near Third Street, the Miracle Mile North district along Detroit and Gardner was built out mainly between 1924 and 1941.

Those houses are a century old now, and the city’s survey notes that much of the original clay tile and wood shingle has been swapped for composition roofing over the years. That usually means gutters, fascia and downspouts were patched in different decades, with mismatched sections and outlets in odd places. The mature parkway trees here are ficus, jacaranda and sycamore, so expect sticky ficus fruit, purple spring bloom and broad sycamore leaves that cup water and block a downspout fast. Downtown’s NOAA station averages about 21 days a year with a tenth of an inch of rain or more, and about nine tenths of the yearly total falls from November through April.

Owner Robinson O’Brien-Bours runs The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Los Angeles, and our crews cover the Miracle Mile along with Hancock Park and Mid-City. We replace mismatched old runs with one seamless system formed on-site, rebuild soft fascia, clean by hand and fit BroGuard under ficus and sycamore. On HPOZ homes we keep profiles and colors in step with the house. The work is done under California contractor license 1140218, and we are bonded and insured.

Miracle Mile Gutter Questions, Answered

Do I need HPOZ approval to replace gutters on the Miracle Mile?

It depends on the scope. The Miracle Mile HPOZ has its own preservation plan, and work visible from the street can call for review, while simple like-for-like repair often does not. Tell us what you are planning and we will describe the materials, profile and color we would use, so you can check with City Planning’s HPOZ staff before work starts.

Why do my gutters clog so fast in the fall?

Sycamores are a big reason. They are among the mature shade trees on Miracle Mile streets, and their wide leaves drop in autumn, fold over the outlet and stop water cold. Ficus fruit adds a sticky layer underneath. A cleaning in October or November and BroGuard mesh on the runs under the canopy solve most of it.

My roof was redone but the gutters are old. Should I replace them?

Often, yes. Many Miracle Mile houses have had their original tile or wood shingle replaced with composition roofing while the gutters stayed. If yours are pieced together, leaking at the joints or pulling off soft fascia, one seamless run formed on-site is usually the better fix. If they are sound, we repair and reseal instead.

Can you handle a fourplex or courtyard building?

Yes. The multifamily blocks around the Miracle Mile include duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and courtyard apartments from the 1920s on. We size gutters and downspouts for the larger roof area, keep outlets off shared walkways and can put the building on a maintenance program so the owner does not have to manage it.

How should I get ready for this winter?

Clean the gutters by November, flush every downspout and look at where water lands after a hard rain. NOAA issued an El Niño Advisory on September 10, 2026, and forecasters expect the strongest El Niño since 1997-98. On flat lots, extensions or underground drainage keep runoff away from the foundation.
