Gutters for Carthay’s three historic districts
Carthay is really three neighborhoods. J. Harvey McCarthy launched Carthay Center in 1922 on 136 acres between Wilshire and Olympic, one of the first planned communities in Los Angeles and the first in the city built with underground utilities. Many of its streets were named for Gold Rush figures, and the Pioneer statue, built as part of a park fountain, went up in 1924. South of Olympic, Spyros George Ponty began South Carthay in the early 1930s on former produce fields, designing 147 Spanish Colonial Revival homes. Carthay Square, between South Carthay and Fairfax Avenue, filled in during the 1920s and 1930s. All three are city HPOZs, and together they were listed on the National Register as one district in 2022.
For gutters, the architecture is the whole job. Carthay Circle homes were each designed by an architect, so no two rooflines match, and the styles run from Spanish Colonial Revival to Tudor, Monterey and French Eclectic. Red clay tile, stucco walls and wrought iron are standard in South Carthay. Tile eaves need hangers set so they do not crack or lift the tile, and flat roof sections drain through scuppers that clog with leaves. The parkway trees across this part of town lean toward southern magnolia, jacaranda and London plane, so there is something falling in every season. NOAA’s Culver City station, a few miles southwest, records 9.20 inches of its yearly rain from December through February alone.
The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Los Angeles belongs to local owner Robinson O’Brien-Bours, and Carthay sits next to Pico-Robertson and Mid-City, two areas we already cover. On HPOZ houses we keep gutters discreet, offer copper and colors that match the trim, rebuild soft fascia and run downspouts where they fade into the facade. Contractor license 1140218, bonded and insured.

What Los Angeles Homeowners Say
“I hired The Brothers That Just Do Gutters to install some gutters above my driveway. The installer was Emiliano. He did an amazing job, didn’t take too much time, was very professional, and charged a fair price. I would highly recommend this company and installer to anyone.”
Posted on Google“Brothers Gutters were amazing. Their quoting and invoicing system was super easy to work with. Hannah and Rhys who did the back end and quote were super responsive. They gave us a really fair price and got the job done a few days later. Really top quality service and work!!”
Posted on Google“We had been looking for someone to install our gutters for quite some time and thought a handyman would be less expensive and more reliable. Were we wrong…”
Posted on GoogleCarthay Circle Gutter Questions, Answered
Yes. Most South Carthay homes have red clay tile roofs, and gutters there need hangers set at the fascia or tucked under the tile so nothing cracks while we work. We form seamless runs on-site, keep them low-profile against the stucco and place downspouts where they blend with the facade.
They can. Carthay Circle, South Carthay and Carthay Square each have their own Historic Preservation Overlay Zone and preservation plan, and street-facing changes may need a look from City Planning. We can lay out the material, profile and color we would use so you have what you need to ask HPOZ staff before we start.
Many Spanish Revival houses in Carthay have flat roof sections that drain through scuppers, openings in the low wall around the roof edge. Leaves collect at the scupper, water backs up on the roof and finds its way inside. We clear them, fit collector boxes and connect them to downspouts so the flat roof drains as well as the sloped one.
Yes. Copper suits many Carthay Circle houses, especially Tudor and French Eclectic designs, and it ages to a dark bronze and then green. We also offer colored aluminum and bonderized steel if copper is more than the project needs. Every option is formed seamless on-site and hung on solid fascia.
Book a cleaning for October or November, have the scuppers and downspouts tested, and walk around the house during the first real rain to see where water lands. With forecasters calling for a strong El Niño in 2026-27, it is worth fixing slow outlets and loose runs now, before the storms start stacking up.
