Gutters that respect Harvard Heights’ Craftsman roofs
Harvard Heights went up fast. Most of its houses are two-story Craftsman homes built between 1902 and 1908, and in 2000 the City Council made 34 blocks of the neighborhood a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. The architects are part of the story. City Planning notes that the Lucy E. Wheeler house on Cambridge Street, designed in 1905, is the only Greene and Greene house still standing in Los Angeles, and the Heineman brothers and Frank Tyler both built here too. Those houses carry broad eaves, exposed rafter tails and long, low roof planes that send a lot of water to one edge.
Gutters here fight two things. The first is the canopy. The city street tree inventory for these blocks is led by Mexican and California fan palms, with jacaranda, pink trumpet trees, ficus, crape myrtle and southern magnolia mixed in, so something is dropping fronds, flowers or leaves in almost every month. The second is how the rain arrives. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for downtown Los Angeles count about 4.2 days a year with an inch or more of rain, and roughly four fifths of the annual total falls from December through March. A century-old gutter that only drips in a drizzle can let go completely on one of those days, and NOAA’s September 2026 El Niño advisory points to a wet winter.
Owner Robinson O’Brien-Bours runs The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Los Angeles, and the same LA crews that work West Adams handle Harvard Heights. On an HPOZ house we start with the wood: rotted fascia board gets replaced so the gutter has something solid to hold. Then we form seamless runs on-site in copper, bonderized steel or colored aluminum matched to your trim, and add BroGuard under the palms. Every estimate is free and in writing.

What Los Angeles Homeowners Say
“I hired The Brothers That Just Do Gutters to install some gutters above my driveway. The installer was Emiliano. He did an amazing job, didn’t take too much time, was very professional, and charged a fair price. I would highly recommend this company and installer to anyone.”
Posted on Google“Brothers Gutters were amazing. Their quoting and invoicing system was super easy to work with. Hannah and Rhys who did the back end and quote were super responsive. They gave us a really fair price and got the job done a few days later. Really top quality service and work!!”
Posted on Google“We had been looking for someone to install our gutters for quite some time and thought a handyman would be less expensive and more reliable. Were we wrong…”
Posted on GoogleHarvard Heights Gutter Questions, Answered
Yes. Exterior changes on an HPOZ house can need City Planning review, so we plan with that in mind. On Harvard Heights Craftsman homes we usually suggest half-round or a simple K-style in copper or colored aluminum matched to the trim. We give you the specs in writing so you can check with the city before any work starts.
Usually a partial clog or an undersized downspout. In light rain the water squeezes past, but on the four or so days a year when downtown gets an inch or more, the trough fills faster than it drains. We flush the outlets, check the slope and, where needed, add a larger downspout or a second drop so the run keeps up.
Replace it before anything else. Harvard Heights houses are more than a century old, and fascia that has stayed wet for years will not hold a hanger. We take the gutter down, cut out the soft wood, install new boards, prime and paint, then rehang a seamless run. Hanging new metal on old rot only moves the failure a few years down the road.
Often. Jacaranda flowers break down into a sticky mat, and fan palm debris is coarse enough to block a downspout in one season. BroGuard’s stainless micro-mesh keeps both out of the trough while rain passes through. On Harvard Heights blocks with heavy overhang, a guard turns a messy clean-out into a quick yearly check.
All of it, from Pico Boulevard to Washington Boulevard between Western and Normandie, including Harvard Boulevard, Hobart Boulevard, Kingsley Drive, Oxford Avenue, Cambridge Street and the blocks near the Ray Charles Memorial Library. We also work in Arlington Heights and West Adams nearby. Call (213) 205-6598 to set up a free written estimate.
