Palms Gutter Solutionists

Gutters for Palms, from 1939 tract homes to apartment rows

Palms goes back to a tract map filed on December 26, 1886, when speculators graded about eight miles of streets, planted 5,000 trees and set out the palms near the train depot that gave the place its name. It joined Los Angeles in 1915. Until the early 1960s most of Palms was single-family houses and small duplexes and triplexes in Craftsman and Spanish styles. Then the city rezoned much of it for apartments, and two-story and larger buildings replaced many of the old houses. The median home in ZIP 90034 was built in 1971, and about four out of five occupied units are rented.

The big exception is Westside Village, the Fritz Burns tract between National Boulevard and Charnock Road, subdivided in 1939 with about 1,200 modest single-family homes on lots of roughly 50 by 135 feet. The houses were built with single-car garages, and many of its streets have no sidewalks, so roof water that misses a downspout ends up on the driveway or the lawn. Street trees across Palms lean toward Canary Island date palm, queen palm, Chinese flame tree, southern magnolia and jacaranda, which means heavy fronds, palm fruit most of the year and papery flame tree seed pods in the fall. NOAA’s Culver City station, just to the south, logs most of its rain from December through March.

Robinson O’Brien-Bours owns the Los Angeles franchise of The Brothers That Just Do Gutters, and our crews work Palms alongside Cheviot Hills and Mar Vista. In Westside Village we replace tired original gutters and add runs to garages that never had them. For apartment owners we handle long runs, flat-roof scuppers and maintenance programs that keep every downspout clear. Our California contractor license is 1140218, and we are bonded and insured.

Palms Gutter Questions, Answered

Do Westside Village houses need bigger gutters?

Usually not bigger, just better placed. Westside Village homes from 1939 are modest, around 900 square feet, so the roof areas are small. The common problems are aging original runs, too few downspouts and water dumping onto the driveway. A seamless system with outlets aimed at the street or a drain fixes most of it, and we can add a run to the garage.

Do you work on apartment buildings in Palms?

Yes, and a lot of Palms is apartments. Since the 1960s rezoning, two-story and larger buildings have replaced many of the old houses. We install and repair long seamless runs, clear scuppers on flat sections, and set up scheduled cleanings so owners and managers know every building is ready before the rain.

What makes palm trees hard on gutters?

Canary Island date palms drop heavy fronds and stalks, and queen palms shed fruit most of the year. Both rank among the most common street trees in Palms. Fronds jam across the trough, and fruit rots into a paste that blocks outlets. A pre-season cleaning and BroGuard mesh keep the trough open and make frond removal quick.

Where should runoff go on a street without sidewalks?

Toward the street or a drain, never back toward the house. Many Palms blocks, especially in Westside Village, have no sidewalks, so water from a downspout can sit on the lawn or run back toward the slab. We aim outlets at the curb where that is allowed, add extensions, or tie them into underground drainage for a cleaner yard.

When should I schedule gutter cleaning in Palms?

Plan a cleaning in October or November, after the flame tree pods fall and before the December storms. A second visit in late spring catches jacaranda bloom and new palm fruit. If you want new gutters, the dry summer months are easiest. NOAA’s Culver City records show about two thirds of the year’s rain arriving December through February.
